Freezing temperatures and snow has forced Canterbury Christ Church University to shut its campuses until after the weekend.
It means that an audience with universities minister Sam Gyimah scheduled for tonight (Thursday) has been cancelled.
Fresh falls of snow this morning have been affected roads and other forms of transport across the district.
Eastern England is currently being hit with a cold weather system blown over from Russia known as the Beast from the East.
At 9am Christ Church announced: “The weather forecast for Canterbury and Broadstairs has recently changed with severe snow forecast for the next three hours.
“As a result, Canterbury and Broadstairs campuses will close with immediate effect so that colleagues and students who have arrived can travel home safely.”
Mr Gyimah had been due to speak at Old Sessions House tonight on the future of higher education in the UK.
The university will reopen on Monday, March 5.
