Council to ask contractor why fewer street cleaners were out

Canterbury City Council says it will investigate the reasons why its contractor Serco didn’t send out a full complement of street cleaners last weekend.

It is understood that only around half the usual amount of street cleaners were on duty in the district.

The authority says Serco has promised that full cleaning crews will be out over the long Easter weekend.

City council spokesman Rob Davies said: “It seems there were fewer street cleaning staff on duty in the district last weekend.

“We’re looking into why that was with Serco, but can confirm a full complement of staff will be working over Easter weekend and on all weekends from then on.”

Canterbury’s waste and cleaning contract is up for renewal in 2021.

It is currently waging a war on litter using enforcement officers to fine litterbugs and is encouraging people to do more to keep the district clean.
