Police in Canterbury warn residents to beware of bogus callers

Householders across the Canterbury district are being warned to be on the look out for bogus callers following an attempted distraction burglary in Whitstable.

At around 1pm on Wednesday, April 11 an attempted burglary was reported at a house in Burnan Road.

Police say a man claiming to be from Trading Standards and asked to be let in because he needed to check windows.

Once inside the house, he distracted the victim by asking him for a drink of water.

Det Sgt Brian Doughty said: “Fortunately the victim sensed something was amiss and returned to find the suspect searching through drawers.

“Upon being challenged by the victim, the suspect left immediately in the direction of Swalecliffe.

“Remember that if someone comes to your door, whether or not you were expecting them, do not be afraid to ask them for identification and check they are genuine first before letting them inside your home.

“If in doubt ask them to leave and come back when a family member or friend can be with you.”

The suspect is white, 5 ft 10 ins tall with short black hair and was smartly dressed.
