Rowing in the city centre – who, what, why…?

Shoppers braving the Arctic temperatures in Canterbury this morning were met with a strange sight.

Outside Barclays Bank two people sweated away on rowing machines as the first snow of the current cold snap fell.

Upon closer inspection, passers-by would have spotted the two charity collection buckets set out before the two rowing machines.

The young man and woman rowing, it turns out, are part of a University of Kent student fund-raising exercise known as an Ergathon.

A team of rowers are taking it in turns as they raise cash for Mind, the mental health charity.

At least they had the frigid weather to keep them cool…
