The Buttermarket, Canterbury, in the 1970s

VIDEO: Pure nostalgia: Footage shows Canterbury in the 1970s

So how much has Canterbury really changed since the 1970s?

Well, you can judge for yourself by watching this extraordinary footage of the city in the decades of flares, disco and Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em.

It shows a former Archbishop of Canterbury, Michael Ramsey, leaving the Cathedral for a walk around the city centre and stopping to chat to people.

The video is titled Archbishop of Canterbury 1971-74, although Ramsey in fact served from 1961 until 1974.

He is seen emerging from the Cathedral into the Buttermarket before strolling around streets familiar to us all.

The footage should have those who remember the city cooing in nostalgic delight. For the rest of us, it’s just a pleasure to see the great city how it used to be.
